Howard University Adult R&B 96.3 WHUR Washington DC has flipped its HD2 subchannel from World Music to The Quiet Storm Station. Before long, it caught on around the country and evolved into a new market. Briefly, radio mogul Cathy Hughes, owner of Radio One, was the general manager at Howard University radio WHUR during the early '70s when she created the format "the quiet storm." She used Smokey Robinson's composition as the theme song. In 1976, he brought the Quiet Storm to the station’s late-night lineup, titled after a romantic hit single by tenor crooner Smokey Robinson.
Lindsey began his broadcast career as an intern at Howard University radio station WHUR-FM. The lyric of the ballad "The Agony and the Ecstasy" hit the Top Ten at number seven, and it was followed by the masterpiece "A Quiet Storm." Although it only managed to seal the Top 25, it has since made a greater impact on the music charts and music industry. He is widely known for originating the Quiet Storm late-night music programming format. Melvin’s playlists were copied by countless radio stations but the true sound of The Quiet Storm could never be duplicated. It was Robinson's first number one single since leaving the Miracles. Howard University’s WHUR Radio was the birthplace of Melvin Lindsey’s Quiet Storm, an imaginative mix of unadulterated soul music from the masters of R&B. Arranged in an intermittent rhythm, "Baby That's Backatcha" ran up the Billboard R&B charts to number one inside 16 weeks. The format originated when then intern Melvin Lindsey played a soothing string of songs during a particularly bad storm in the mid-1970s, even as power was cut to most of the other radio. The album itself had three singles hit the charts. The Quiet Storm format of mellow, rhythm and blues/soul music, smooth jazz and love songs often played at night on many radio stations started at WHUR. The title track became the namesake for a music format. As many of his prior songs had shaped R&B and pop music, this album would have a similar effect.
